HOTEL "AUSTRIA"

Hotel "Austria"

Hotel "Austria", built in 1890 along Metković's Main Street, is the second oldest hotel on the Croatian coast. Only the Hotel "Kvarner" in Opatija, which was built six years earlier, is older. The opening of Hotel "Austria" indicates the importance that Metković, in parallel with the increasing interest of the Austrian authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, gradually acquired from the beginning of the second half of the 19th century.

The building was originally a two-story building, with a simple ground plan, with a mirror-symmetrical facade facing the street. It stands out for its simple historicist characteristics and modest decoration: semicircular arches on the ground floor, division of the floors by cornices, profiling of the windows on the first floor and a stylized entablature at the top (architraves, frieze with oculi, protruding final cornice).
