Railway station
On the right bank of the Neretva River, not far from the port, at the very turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Railway Station building was built, although the first railway connection between Metković and Mostar was established as early as 1885, and a few years later, the line between Mostar and Sarajevo. The station building is a monumental multi-storey building characterized by the dominance of historicist stylistic elements over modest Art Nouveau elements. In the past, the railway and the railway station played an important role in the development of Metković and in the lives of its residents and guests, so much so that the Austrian heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, passed through the Metković port and railway station before and after the Sarajevo assassination in 1914. In recent decades, railway passenger traffic and the station building itself have been losing importance, especially after all passenger lines were discontinued.
